Luxury Hotel

Opened in 2003 aa the Hotel Gladiatori, its previous name refers to the Ludus Magnus gladiator training school that once stood on the same ground with underground labyrinth that connected the fighters to the adjacent Coliseum. We came to discover Palazzo Mandredi backwards, namely at Capri's Punta Tragara which owners Counts Goffredo and Leonardo Mandfredi impressively transformed into one the island's top three hotels

Not the usual Via Veneto or Borghese address of Rome's posh hotels, Manfreddi occupies a pale salmon palazzo directly opposite the Coliseum in Rome's historical center. A busy thoroughfare recedes to a tranquil lobby with single counter reception of amber wood flooring and lighting ala electrified candelabras. An adjoining sitting room is more hush-hush private than public, arranged in two-handed picture books and rotating art collection that draws on the owners' own collections and local galleries.

The star-amenity of Palazzo Manfredi is best evident at its rooftop Aroma Restaurant, a terrace eatery and dining room with jaw-dropping views of the great Coliseum. Enclosed in massive picture windows with large terrace, a truly unique dining experience is led by chef Giuseppe Di Iorio like sea-bass carpaccio, truffle-scented veal loin and glazed Barbery duck that can even be delivered directly to your room as well as an after-dinner spin in the house Lamborghini.

The Room

An air of Italian aristocracy reigns supreme amongst the hotel’s 14 guest rooms and 2 suites. Guest room are enwrapped in Venetian plaster detailing with arty Ingo Maurer light fixtures and large palazzo windows facing the Coliseum in most rooms. What often feels like a private home, smaller rooms are compact spaces all designed by Maria-Renata Fimiani with single table and chair arrangements and center-floated Queen bed dressed up with floor-to-ceiling draped and stark white bedside lamps. Stylish but not trendy, upgraded rooms come with Espresso machines and large living areas with more architectural details like beam ceiling, large marble bathrooms and fireplace mantles of the former 16th Century residence.
